Social Skills Group

What will it target?

In a small group of 4-6 students, children will learn and practice social communication skills and coping strategies with their peers. Topics covered will include: Initiating & maintaining conversations, responding appropriately to questions and comments, taking the perspective of others, understanding non-verbal communication, facial expressions and emotions, following social norms with peers, understanding figurative language, and problem solving and flexible thinking.

What can I expect?

Each session will include time of review, direct teaching of new concepts, and practicing skill in a fun social game or activity. Each session will also incorporate some unstructured time to facilitate spontaneous conversation and observation for areas of need. Visual supports and movement will be used for teaching and reviewing in order to support different learning styles. Parents will receive summary of topics covered as well as extension activities after each session. Lessons will utilize some vocabulary and ideas from the “Social Thinking Curriculum” by Michelle Garcia Winner.
